Everything a printed code should be able to do

Once a code is on a menu, a box, or a billboard, reprinting is the expensive part. Dynamic links move the decisions into your account instead.

Made in your browser

Static codes are generated entirely on your device. Nothing is uploaded unless you create a dynamic link or host a file, and we say exactly what those store.

No scan-count paywall

Free dynamic links have unlimited scans and no expiry. A code you printed keeps working; we do not hold it hostage.

Data you can erase

Free plans keep aggregate counts only. Pro per-scan records are kept about 90 days, and you can export or delete them at any time.

What "free" usually means, and what it means here

Most free QR code generators are free at the point of making a code and expensive at the point of using one. The usual patterns are a watermark on the export, a vector file locked behind a plan, a code that quietly expires after a trial, or a sign-up wall between you and the download.

Reticle has none of those. The generator on this page makes unlimited codes, exports them clean, and does not ask who you are. The file you download is the finished file, and there is no upgraded version of it.

What the free generator actually includes

There is no feature on that list that you unlock by paying. It is the whole static generator.

The SVG is free, and that is the one that matters for print

If you are sending a code to a commercial printer, they will almost certainly ask for a vector file. A PNG is a grid of pixels and it will look soft or ragged once it is enlarged onto a sign, a banner, or packaging artwork. An SVG is made of shapes and stays perfectly sharp at any size.

Vector export is one of the most commonly paywalled features in this category, which is worth knowing when you compare "free" generators: a free PNG that cannot go to print is not the same product as a free SVG that can. Reticle exports SVG and PDF at no cost, along with PNG and JPEG.

A static code cannot expire, because there is nothing to switch off

This is the part that is worth understanding properly, because it is the difference between a code that is yours and a code you are renting.

A static QR code contains the data itself. The link, the text, or the Wi-Fi password is encoded directly into the black and white pattern, and a scanner reads it straight off the image. There is no server involved, no account attached, and no record kept. A code you make here will keep working if you delete your browser history, if you never visit this site again, and if Reticle itself disappears entirely.

Some free generators issue codes that route through their servers even when you did not ask for a trackable code, which is what makes those codes able to expire, break on a free plan, or start showing an upgrade page. A static code from this page is incapable of doing any of that.

Nothing you type is uploaded

The code is drawn in your browser. Whatever you encode, a Wi-Fi password for your guests, a personal phone number, a home address on a contact card, is turned into a pattern on your own device and never sent anywhere. A logo you add is processed locally too.

The one thing that works differently is a dynamic code, which stores its destination by design so that you can change it later. That is a deliberate choice you make, not the default, and the privacy policy states exactly what it stores.

Check the code before you print it

Heavy styling can quietly break a QR code. A logo that covers too much of the pattern, or a foreground and background too close in contrast, will produce something that looks right on screen and fails on a phone, which you would rather discover before a print run than after one.

Reticle ships two things for this and both are free: a Test scan in the generator that decodes your actual code on your own device, and a full QR scanner you can point at a printed proof. Confirming a code reads correctly is the only real proof it works, and it costs nothing here.

Where free ends

One thing genuinely is limited, and it is worth being plain about it. Dynamic codes, the kind where you can change the destination after the code is printed, need an account and hosting behind them, so the free plan includes 3 of them. Those 3 have unlimited scans and no expiry.

If you need more, or you want per-scan analytics, your own short domain on the printed code, file codes, smart routing, link pages, passwords, or scheduling, that is Reticle Pro at $12 a month. None of it is needed to make an ordinary QR code, which is what this page is for.

Frequently asked questions

Is there really no watermark?

No watermark, in any format, at any size, on any plan. The file you download contains your QR code and nothing else: no logo in the corner, no branding baked into the image, and no attribution requirement. There is also no watermarked preview that turns clean once you pay, because the free export is the finished file.

Do I need to make an account?

Not to make or download a code. The generator on this page works signed out, and every content type, every styling control, the logo and center icon, and PNG, SVG, JPEG and PDF export are available without signing in. An account is only useful for two things: saving codes so you can reopen them later, and dynamic codes, which are the kind you can repoint after printing.

Will my QR code stop working or expire?

A static code cannot expire. The code is the data: a link, some text, or a Wi-Fi password encoded directly into the pattern, with no server in the middle and no account attached to it. A scanner reads it straight off the image, so it keeps working whatever happens to Reticle, your account, or your internet connection. Nothing is being tracked and nothing can be switched off.

Can I use these codes commercially?

Yes. Put them on packaging, menus, signage, business cards, or anything you sell, at any volume, with no license fee and no credit required. The QR code standard itself is open and unpatented for this purpose, and Reticle adds no restriction of its own to the files you export.

Is the SVG a real vector file?

Yes, and it is free. The SVG contains actual vector shapes, so it scales to a billboard with no blur and no pixel edges, which is what a commercial printer will usually ask for. This is often the first thing put behind a paywall elsewhere. Alongside it you can export PNG, JPEG, and PDF, with a transparent background if you need the code to sit on artwork.

Is my data sent anywhere?

Not for a static code. The code is drawn in your browser, so a Wi-Fi password, a phone number, or a contact card is encoded on your device and never reaches a server. A logo you add is also handled locally. This changes only if you choose to make a dynamic code, which by definition stores its destination so it can be edited later; the privacy policy sets out exactly what that stores.

What is not free?

Dynamic codes beyond the first three. A dynamic code points at a short link you control, so you can change where a printed code sends people without reprinting it, and that needs an account and hosting behind it. Three come with the free plan, with unlimited scans and no expiry. Reticle Pro at $12 a month lifts the limit and adds per-scan analytics, your own domain, file codes, smart routing, link pages, passwords, and scheduling. None of that is required to make an ordinary QR code.
